The Concept of AdSense

A lot of people ask me the question about the pay-per-click program like AdSense, they simply do not understand why the publishers get paid through this program. They do not know where does the money come from.

I will try to explain the concept in as plain language as possible so that everyone can understand.  Google’s Pay-Per-Click program actually involves three parties, the first party is the advertisers, the second party is Google and the third party is the publishers. Advertisers wish to market their products and services to the Internet audience through online advertising, and they are willing to pay the advertising fees.

However, in order to reach a wide audience, they need to rely on an Internet advertising agent which already has wide coverage network, so they look for an agent like Google. Google then publish their advertisements through the publishers who are already Google’s registered users, and Google has the largest user base in the world, which could be a few billions of them, though it may be surpassed by Facebook in the near future.

Google collects advertisement fees from the advertisers through a program known as AdWords, the opposite of AdSense. Google then keep a large portion of the fees collected and pay the balance to the publishers as commissions. So can you see the relationship between the three parties? To use laymen language, Google is the middle man that collects money from the advertisers, keep a large percentage of it and pay the balance to the publishers as commissions.

By the way, AdWords is also part of the Pay-Per-Click program, but instead of getting the pay per click, they have to pay Google for every single valid click. Cost per click varies from a few cents to as much as ten dollars depending on the keywords, some keywords pay higher and some keywords pay lower. There is also a bidding system where advertisers bid for a certain keyword and the highest bidders get to display their ads. Google also uses automated contents targeting system to match advertisers and the publishers, which means advertisements that appear on publishers’ websites always almost match the websites’ contents, it is indeed a very sophisticated matching system.

Types of AdSense Ads

Google offers two main categories of Ads for publishers to monetize their websites, manually placed ads, and auto ads. Manually placed ads need to be placed manually on the available space on the website while the auto ads will appear automatically.

Manually Placed Ads

There are four main types of manually placed ads, text & display ads, matched content, in-feed ads, and in-article ads.

The text & display ads is a simple way to get ads on your page. What you have to do is to choose the size, placement, and style you want to display on your web page. The options are horizontal banners, vertical banners, rectangular, responsive, custom size and link ads. I suggest you choose responsive ads because they can adjust automatically to the screen size of different devices. All the aforementioned ads display text and image except the link ads, link ads only display text.

Matched content ads show ads and also promote your content to potentially increase revenue, page views, and time spent on site. This kind of ads unit will display ads alongside image links to your other web pages on your website.

In-feed Ads are ads that flow naturally inside a list of articles or products on your site, offering a great user experience.

In-article Ads are ads that fit seamlessly in between the paragraphs of your pages for an enhanced reading experience. This kind of ads is suitable for the web page with a lot of content.

Auto Ads

According to Google, auto ads are a family of ad formats that offer a simple and innovative way for you to monetize your content. With Auto ads, you place the same piece of ad code once on each page. After you’ve added the code, Google automatically shows ads at optimal times when they’re likely to perform well for you and provide a good experience for your users.

The advantage is Auto ads work equally well on web pages that don’t have ads and on those already showing ads. If you already have ad units on your page, Auto ads will detect them and only place ads where there’s available space. So there’s no need to remove your existing ad units if you don’t want to. If you don’t have any ad units on your page, Auto ads will find all potential placements and use them to monetize your page.

Auto ads also offer two Overlay ads that appear over the top of your pages and might require your users to close or remove them. There are two types of Overlay ads, Anchor ads and Vignette ads (mobile only). Anchor ads stick to the edge of the user’s screen and are easily dismissible. These ads mainly serve on mobile but can appear on the desktop too.

Vignette ads are mobile full-screen ads that appear between page loads on your site and can be skipped by users at any time. Vignettes are displayed when the user leaves a page, rather than when they arrive on one, so the user doesn’t have to wait for them to load.
